The myth of the Sirens was, as pretty women, to lure men into the ocean for consumption, right? What if they were collecting our rubbish instead? Accumulated, left there by pesky human beings. That's why we don't see much of them anymore. They are busy saving their sea friends from this garbage, when they should be taking out the real trash - people.
